Oscar-nominated actor Will Smith is playing the role of American tennis coach Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, in the new film King Richard. The movie follows the incredible story of how Williams, who had no prior tennis experience, coached his daughters into becoming two of the sport’s greatest players.
“Armed with a clear vision and a brazen 78-page plan, Richard Williams is determined to write his daughters, Venus and Serena, into history,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Training on Compton, California’s neglected tennis courts—rain or shine—the girls are shaped by their father’s unyielding commitment and their mother’s balanced perspective and keen intuition, defying the seemingly insurmountable odds and prevailing expectations laid before them.”
During an interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Venus said, “It’s really about my dad and how he literally changed the game and how he’s a revolutionary kind of person. I love him to death.”
Williams, who came from humble beginnings, experienced racism and poverty growing up in Louisiana. Despite his challenges, he was always motivated to make sure his family became successful. While training his daughters, he constantly kept in mind the teachings of his mother. “My mom taught me that whatever I expected for myself that’s what I could be and I always expected to be well off,” Williams once shared in an interview.
Serena also shared her excitement about the new film on Instagram.
“I’m SO excited for you to watch the new trailer for #KingRichard, starring Will Smith and featuring the song “Be Alive” by Beyoncé 🖤Seeing this film (based on Venus’ and my true story) come to life has been one of the coolest experiences.
