Jennifer Hudson, Nas, and Jeffery Wright star in the new Netflix film Monster, inspired by the 1999 novel written by Walter Dean Myers. The movie depicts the story of Steve Harmon, played by Kelvin Harrison Jr, a seventeen-year-old honors student who is charged with a felony.
Originally called All Rise, the movie premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is co-executive produced by Nasir “Nas” Jones and John Legend. Netflix subsequently acquired the film and will premiere it on May 7. Monster is a thought-provoking film that will move audiences to have conversations about the Criminal Justice System.
There is a stellar lineup of cast members as well. Harmon’s mother and father are played by actors Hudson and Wright. They inspire him to maintain his unwavering faith in his critical circumstances. Other actors include ASAP Rocky, Hjarrel Jerome, Tim Black Nelson, and John David Washington.
Legend, who has also executive produced other works like Jingle Jangle and Underground, expressed his pride in being a part of Monster. “I’m so proud to be a producer and songwriter for this beautiful film. I can’t wait for you to see Monster on @netflix May 7th,” he wrote on Instagram.
Hudson also shared her excitement on Instagram. “MONSTER. I am beyond excited to share the official trailer for MONSTER, coming to @netflix May 7! It’s such a powerful film and it couldn’t come at a better time. For many reasons this story is close to my heart and I can’t wait for y’all to finally see it. @netflixfilm @strongblacklead”
